The building blocks of atomic physics are atoms. The nucleus is located at the center of the atom and majority of the mass is made up of the nucleus, thus the building blocks for nuclear physics are nuclei that are linked closely with the atoms themselves. The term atom came from Greece and was coined by Democritus to define the “little structures on a microscopic level.” British physicist J. J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and Niels Bohr are just a few of the many scientists that have studied and made atomic and nuclear physics into what it is today. They had several models of what an atom and a nucleus entail resulting in further scientific findings in nuclear physics. However Rutherford was the first scientist to discover the nucleus and in 1911, he did so through his gold foil experiment. Some of the many contributions that nuclear physics made include nuclear fusion, and nuclear fission (radioactive decay or radiation), weapons, and any other result of mass being converted into energy.
